“The Dog and the Cat” are two caves standing proudly and overlooking the village from the edge of the steep cliff of Plakasia, specifically at Trilagado within the Tsakonas ravine. They derived their name from their distinctive silhouettes, particularly that of the “dog.” Historically, they served as watchtowers for the fortified settlement of Paleokastro, the island’s first capital. Inside and around them, in addition to the guards’ quarters, lie three Byzantine-era churches. To reach the site, visitors can either take one of the three hiking trails starting from Mitata, or drive up to the spring of Viaradika (the village on the opposite side).
