The Castle of Palaiochora is surrounded by the canyon of Kakia Lagada. The settlement was the old capital city of the island up to the time it was ravaged by Barbarossa, the pirate in the 16th century after which it was deserted. Palaiochora is accessible by car from the main road as well as from route M31 which begins from Potamos and is considered to be an easy and pleasant visit. For the most risky ones, the canyon is accessible by canyoning.
